Sony PSP Go Review

Thursday, December 31, 2009

The PSP Go may have been the worst-kept secret of this year's E3 show, but Sony's press conference supplied the official details. The Go is smaller than the PSP 3000, has a slide-up screen and doesn't have a UMD (Universal Media Disc) drive. Nor does it have any game-changing upgrades, such as a touchscreen or second analogue stick. The Go will be available in the UK on 2 October for £250 -- a shocking hike on the US price of $250 (£150).

Here's a roundup of the Go's features and specs, as we understand them so far.

Form factor
The Go has a 97mm (3.8-inch) screen, compared to a 109mm screen on all previous PSP models. It's said to be 43 per cent lighter than the 3000, which means it would weigh in at about 110g. The Go's design is very reminiscent of that of the Sony mylo, with the screen sliding up to reveal the controls.

Storage
The Go will offer 16GB of built-in flash memory, expandable via a Memory Stick Micro (M2) slot. There's no UMD drive on the Go. While that no doubt allows for the smaller size (and, we hope, the potential for better battery life), it also means there's no way to play existing PSP software you might own.

Controls
While the layout may be different, the control scheme on the Go is little changed from earlier PSP models: a four-way d-pad on the left, the standard quartet of geometrically coded Sony controls (circle, square, cross and triangle) on the right, select/start buttons in the middle, and the PlayStation home button to the left of the screen.

A second analogue control is always at or near the top of wish lists for PSP redesigns, so its absence is a disappointment. At the same time, sticking with the same control scheme means game compatibility between the Go and older PSPs is assured. It remains to be seen whether the single stick's placement -- closer to the centre of the control deck, rather than the outside right, where it sits on earlier PSPs -- will be problematic for seasoned PSP gamers. That said, the Go's control layout is more closely aligned to that of a traditional full-size PlayStation controller.

Wireless
In addition to Wi-Fi support, the Go adds Bluetooth capability to the Sony handheld platform for the first time. That should allow standard Bluetooth headsets (and, presumably, A2DP headphones and speakers) to pair with the Go.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 Review

Wednesday, December 30, 2009

Ultimately, Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 marks the continuation of the slide over the past few years that has seen EA’s FIFA Soccer series overtake Pro Evo as the best football game in the land. The most disconcerting thing about Pro Evo 2010 in particular is that while the series has been lagging behind in terms of presentation and licenses for a while now, this is the first time where there is really a huge gap between the two series in terms of gameplay. FIFA took big steps forward while Pro Evo has taken baby steps and the result is a game that just plain isn’t as good as the competition. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

What is it with sports games and the long time competitor finally catching up to the champ and not just beating them, but blowing them out of the water? We’ve seen it with hockey, football (before EA gobbled up the NFL license), soccer, and (soon to be, trust me) basketball. Is it that the new games are that much better, or is the older “champ” not as hot as we thought it was in the first place? The rapid decline of the Pro Evolution Soccer series has been stunning and, unfortunately, Pro Evo 2010 doesn’t do much to stem the tide. Find out all of the details in our full review.

The strengths of the Pro Evo series are still strengths in Pro Evo 2010. The Master League career mode is still the biggest and deepest and most satisfying soccer career mode around. Become a Legend (Pro Evo’s version of Be A Pro where you control just one player rather than the whole team) is a solid and fun mode. We also really like the UEFA Champions League integration, which is pretty significant and almost makes up for the lack of major International tournament licenses.

Unfortunately, the longtime weaknesses of the series are still present here as well. The lack of licensed teams and players is still a big letdown compared to FIFA. Sure, there are lots of real teams and players available, but none that casual U.S. fans are really going to care about. There is no MLS here, and the U.S. National Team isn’t even made up of real players. You can edit pretty much every aspect of the game to insert any players and teams you want, but why work when the competition hands it to you on a silver platter?

Gameplay
As far as gameplay goes, Pro Evo 2010 just feels stiff. Unfortunately, we don’t live in a vacuum where FIFA doesn’t exist and/or a world where we can wipe FIFA 10 from our memories, so comparing the two is the only way to really describe what one gets right and one gets wrong. Pro Evo 2010 does sport 360-degree player control just like FIFA, but it somehow feels stiff and not nearly as good here. Players get locked into animations and they have to finish the animation before they can do anything else, which makes for some awkward movements and players not really behaving the way you wanted them to. The A.I. is a problem here as well. Talking about Become a Legend specifically, the A.I. does a good job of getting the ball to you when you are in the right position, but never really make the runs that they should to get into position themselves, which makes the game feel like you have to do everything and can’t really count on the A.I. Where FIFA is smooth and flowing and beautiful, Pro Evo is kind of slow and clunky.

That isn’t to say you can’t still produce some really pretty, really satisfying goals in Pro Evo 2010, because you definitely still can. Once you get used to its quirks, there is a solid soccer game here that is a lot of fun. The problem comes when you compare it with the competition, and it just plain isn’t as good.

Graphics & Sound
The presentation has also been an area of weakness for Pro Evo in the past. Pro Evo 2010 does sport a new (and quite attractive) magazine-style menu system and player likenesses have been greatly improved, but the game overall still just doesn’t look all that good. The crowd and stadiums just look awful. The commentary is also noteworthy in just how poor it is. It is always a few seconds behind and Jon Champion and Mark Lawrenson never really have anything interesting to say anyway.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Review

Thursday, December 24, 2009

The final piece of the Modern Warfare 2 package is the single-player campaign. The campaign was my favorite part of COD4 (I still consider the two sniper-focused missions as my favorite FPS missions ever), so I had high hopes for MW2’s campaign. In some ways in lives up to the hype, but in other ways it feels like a step backward from COD4.

Never before has a game shaped the release landscape like Modern Warfare 2 has. Other publishers were scared of Activision and Infinity Ward’s latest project and delayed their own games because of it. That is completely awesome. And you know what? It was justified. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is one of the best selling games of the HD generation and Modern Warfare 2 improves on that winning formula in just about every way. This is a must play game.

Multiplayer

Multiplayer is the part of MW2 you are probably going to spend the most time with, so we’ll start there. It uses the same addictive formula that COD4 introduced where as you play you level up and earn new weapons and perks that let you customize the way you play. If you have preferred weapons or perks you can play that way and your experience will be completely personal and different from everyone else you are playing with. A new touch in MW2 is that some game modes are locked from the start and you have to level up to play them. This means that you can’t play higher-level game types until you have proven yourself, which is generally a pretty good idea anyway.

All in all, the level system and customization make Modern Warfare 2 one of the most addictive and fun multiplayer games around. The gameplay itself can be a bit intimidating since it is more realistic (than say, Halo) and it only takes one bullet or one burst from an automatic to kill someone, so new players will die a lot, but once you learn the maps it gets a lot better. It isn't instantly accessible like some games, but worth the effort it takes to learn it.

Spec Ops
A new addition to Modern Warfare 2 is the Spec Ops mode. These missions can be played solo or co-op (both splitscreen or Xbox Live), and are single-player-style missions against the A.I., but without all of the story stuff getting in the way. There are tons of Spec Ops missions, each with different objectives to complete, and run the gamut from fighting off waves of enemies to clearing all enemies in a level to escort missions to stealth missions and many more. Each mission has multiple difficulties, and earning all 69 stars for beating every mission on each difficulty is a real challenge.

Spec Ops is a great addition because it gives you bite sized pieces of any of the single-player gameplay scenarios you want to choose from. Single-player is great, but sometimes I just want to shoot some dudes with a sniper rifle, and SP doesn’t always make that as easy as I’d like. That is what Spec Ops is for. Likewise, Spec Ops is the closest MW2 gets to a co-op mode, so if you have been itching for some Modern Warfare-style co-op (and I know I have, no co-op was one of my few complaints with COD4), Spec Ops fits that role nicely.

Overview of Online Games

Tuesday, December 22, 2009

Online games are becoming more popular with each passing year. As more people connect to the internet and install Shockwave or Java on their computers, a huge market will open up for free online games. The prices on computers are dropping, and this means that more people with have access to independent games. Many seasoned gamers are annoyed by the politics which often exist in large video game companies.

Many gamers are also looking for games which allow them to interact with other players. Even with the success of online fighting games, many developers have not bothered to create them. MMORPGs are becoming more popular than ever before. Players want to interact with each other and create their own identities in the digital world. This is the direction in which I believe free online games are headed today. As the internet becomes more widely used, people want interaction more than graphics.

Because the video game market of today is so saturated, the cost of these games have dramatically decreased. It doesn't cost much money to develope a quality game if you know where to look. This will open the door for many independent game companies to design games which are an alternative to the mainstream console games which currently dominate the market. Shockwave and Java are tools that have allowed many people to cost effectively produce free online games.

As the graphics, gameplay, and storylines of these games continue to improve, more people will play them. While the PC game market declined at the end of the 1990s, it is expected that independent online games will fill this void. Multiplayer online games should be free or very cheap to play. Because the cost to produce them is so low, there is no reason why players should have pay $60 to buy one game. The low cost trend for online games can be seen at the Shockwave website, where they charge as littles as $9.95 for a game.

Many online games can be downloaded directly onto your computer. There is no need to go out to the store or order them through the mail. The games are available to play as soon as you download them. In addition to interactivity, people want things quickly. We live in a society in which virtually everything moves fast. When people want to play games, they want them as soon as possible. This is a demand that free online games can meet.

Introduction To Video Poker Games

Tuesday, December 15, 2009

Many players go in for various video poker games for their high technology graphics, innovative animations and wild sounds. There are various video poker games available now in casinos. The list includes jacks or better, deuces wild, all American, joker poker, bonus poker, joker’s wild and king of the decks. Though all the video poker games involve standard cards to play with, the difference lies in the payout strategy and the number of decks each game uses for its play.

Every video poker game has an individual payout table in which it lists the payout for a full house and for a royal flush. According to the website poker-king.com, “jacks or better” is the most popular amongst the video poker games and has a payout of 99.5%. This game is comparatively simple to play and gives an experience that helps to play other complicated video poker games.

Jacks or better has a good payout table making it a good paying machine and it has good full house and flush payouts. For example, for a 9/6 payout table on full house the player gets 9 counts and on a royal flush, he gets 6 counts. This video poker game involves five cards and uses a single standard deck of 52 cards. The player starts with inserting a coin and pressing the play key. A set of five cards appear on the monitor .The player can hold any card and any number of cards. After he holds the desired cards he presses deal button, all the cards tend to shuffle except the held cards. When the whole set of cards make a deal the player wins and collects his coins or points. The maximum win is obtained when you play all five coins and royal flush.

Deuces wild uses the standard single set of 52 cards. In this video poker game, all the 2’s, that is all four deuces are considered as wild cards. This becomes a bonus to the players and increases the probability to make a full house. The minimum rank for a winning hand is three of a kind. The key rule here is that one should never discard a deuce.

Joker’s wild involves a complete set of standard 52 card deck. Here joker is taken as a wild card. That is this joker can be used to substitute any other card. This becomes a bonus to the players and the chances of a winning hand are increased. The minimum rank for a winning hand becomes two pair.

Another type of video poker games is the king of the decks. It uses 5 decks of a standard set of 52 cards. The game here is to collect 5 kinds of clubs. Since this video poker game involves a large number of cards the probability of a win comparatively is less. But on the complete collection of all 5 kinds of clubs the game is over and you win the jackpot. The three most popular video poker games according to the poker-king.com website are 9/6 jack’s or better, 10/7 double bonus, and full pay deuces wild.
